Underwater Minerals Conference 2024: A Unique Learning Opportunity for Cook Islanders
11 SEPTEMBER 2024
On behalf of the Cook Islands Prime Minister and Minister for Seabed Minerals, Honourable Mark Brown, the Seabed Minerals Authority (SBMA) is excited to be a sponsor of the 52nd Underwater Minerals Conference (UMC), the world’s leading event for ocean mineral stakeholders, with presentations taking place in Rarotonga next week 16 to 19 September 2024 at the National Auditorium.
Hosted by the International Marine Minerals Society (IMMS) with the Cook Islands government, UMC brings together experts from over 25 countries to explore marine minerals' geological, biological, regulatory, and policy aspects.
The UMC theme this year is Going Deep: Getting the Science Right for Informed Decisions.
Since its inception in 1970, the UMC has served as a critical platform for dialogue and collaboration among ocean mineral stakeholders. The conference offers a unique opportunity for technical specialists, government agencies, and industry leaders to convene and discuss all elements of deep-sea mining and research.
Under the technical program chairmanship of Dr. John Wiltshire, the 2024 UMC will address a broad range of topics, from cutting-edge technological advancements and regulatory frameworks to environmental sustainability and socio-economic impacts on local communities.
The SBMA’s sponsorship of the UMC underscores the Cook Islands dedication to fostering global collaboration and advancing sustainable practices in the seabed minerals sector.

For the first time in IMMS’s long and proud history, they are offering free access to individuals not officially registered. This offer is for our Cook Islands residents. This presents a unique opportunity for Cook Islanders to hear directly from leading technical experts in the marine minerals field.
If you want to come along, please contact UMC Conference Manager Laura Azevedo to register as a local participant: [email protected]
SBMA is thrilled to support UMC and looks forward to welcoming participants to Rarotonga. Our involvement reflects the Cook Islands commitment to sustainability, environmental stewardship, scientific research and building capacity within our communities.
