The Cook Islands recently hosted the 52nd Underwater Minerals Conference (UMC) from 15 to 21 September 2024, marking the first time this prestigious event took place in a small island state. Organised by the International Marine Minerals Society (IMMS) in partnership with the Cook Islands Seabed Minerals Authority, the conference was held at the Cook Islands National Auditorium, attracting experts, researchers, and industry leaders from around the world.

The theme "Going Deep: Getting the Science Right for Informed Decisions" underscored the importance of a science-based and informed approach to seabed minerals (SBM) development. Dr. John Wiltshire, President of IMMS, curated a dynamic and informative programme, offering deep insights into the latest science and technology developments in this space.

A Memorable Week of Events

The conference officially opened on Sunday, 15 September, with a vibrant cultural ceremony and cocktail evening hosted by the Cook Islands Seabed Minerals Authority (SBMA) at Tamarind House.

Prime Minister and Minister Responsible for Seabed Minerals, Honourable Mark Brown, delivered an opening address, highlighting the importance of the event.

"Hosting UMC 2024 in our beautiful islands reflected the Cook Islands' growing role in the global conversation on seabed minerals," said Prime Minister Brown, "as well as our shared commitment to advancing scientific research in the seabed minerals sector and connecting with others who share that commitment.”

The evening featured guest speakers and traditional Cook Islands entertainment, setting the tone for an exciting and impactful week.

The technical sessions began on Monday, 16 September, with the first day’s discussions focused on SBM development and legal considerations, chaired by Dr. Philomene Verlaan of the Advisory Committee on the Protection of the Sea and Dr. John Wiltshire of the University of Hawaii respectively.

Tuesday 17 September shifted focus to support technologies and the Pacific region’s role in seabed minerals development, with sessions chaired by Dr. Mark Luther from the University of South Florida and Dr. John Parianos, Knowledge Management Director at SBMA. The highlight was having our very own Rima Browne from SBMA and Rose Strickland from NES present their work at UMC.

Wednesday 18 September continued with discussions on mining technologies, autonomous systems, and environmental considerations. Chaired by Dr. Charles Morgan of Moana Hohonu Consulting and Dr. Samantha Smith of Blue Globe Solutions/GSR, these sessions explored innovative research and forward-looking solutions.

Finally, Thursday 19 September featured the IMMS Annual General Meeting, followed by further environmental discussions. A presentation led by Cook Islander Mr. Eusenio Fatialofa of Cook Islands Seabed Resources (CSR) highlighted CSR’s achievements in the region, offering valuable knowledge-sharing opportunities.

UMC’s first ever field trip to a nodules field departed on the Thursday with world leading scientists and local stakeholders.

Opening UMC to the Cook Islands public

For the first time in its long history, IMMS provided an open invite to Cook Islands residents. This was also made possible by the UMC sponsors who covered this cost portion of attendance for those members of the public who registered. IMMS and the Cook Islands Government were pleased with the interest by Cook Islands residents to attend the UMC and engage in learning.

“We want our people to be well informed on SBM issues,” said Commissioner Alex Herman, “Hosting UMC in the Cook Islands enabled us to bring this great opportunity of knowledge and learning to our Cook Islands people. That is probably our greatest success from UMC.”

SBMA will also be organising another event featuring some of the UMC presenters for the Cook Islands public. Details on this event will be released in due course.
