Cook Islands to Host the Seminal Underwater Minerals Conference in 2024!
The Underwater Minerals Conference (UMC) 2023 in Rotterdam, Netherlands, witnessed an unexpected development. The Cook Islands will host the 52nd edition of this prestigious gathering, which has been the foundation of the marine minerals’ community since 1970!
Making the announcement was Prime Minister and Minister Responsible for Seabed Minerals Mark Brown, supported by Seabed Minerals Authority (SBMA) SBM Commissioner Alex Herman.
Also present at the conference were Senior Knowledge Management Officer, Ms. Rima Browne, and Knowledge Management Director, Dr. John Parianos, who delivered a groundbreaking technical presentation highlighting the Cook Islands' commitment to responsible minerals harvesting. Their findings explored how a balance between minerals harvesting and preserving natural seabed features could work, providing a promising solution for managing potential environmental impacts.
The Underwater Minerals Conference, an annual international forum with representatives from over 25 countries, highlights the Cook Islands' growing global significance in seabed mineral activities. This accomplishment reflects not only SBMA's diligence but also our industry's growing influence on the global stage.
As we look forward to hosting UMC 2024 along with Cook Islands Tourism, we thank the International Marine Minerals Society (IMMS) and the University of South Florida College of Marine Sciences (USF CMS) for the opportunity.
This milestone demonstrates the Cook Islands' dedication to sustainable marine resource management, and it marks a watershed moment in our ongoing commitment to responsible development.
