The International Seabed Authority (ISA) is the global body responsible for regulating mineral activities in international waters, ensuring the protection of the marine environment and fair sharing of benefits from seabed resources.
The Cook Islands has been an active member of the International Seabed Authority since 1996. Over the years, the we have consistently participated in ISA meetings and discussions, advocating for strong environmental safeguards, responsible seabed minerals management, and the interests of Small Island Developing States. The Cook Islands continues to contribute to global dialogue on deep-sea governance while ensuring its national policies align with or improve upon international best practices.
In 2016 CIIC signed an exploration contract with the ISA for polymetallic nodules in the CCZ.
